THE JOURNALIST
HASSAN RUVAKUKI
MUST BE FREED
Hassan Ruvakuki has just been sentenced to three years in prison on appeal although he is innocent.
A reporter for Radio France Internationale’s Swahili service and for Bonesha FM, a local radio station, Hassan Ruvakuki was arrested by Burundian intelligence officials in Bujumbura on 28 November 2011.
After a six-month judicial saga he was sentenced in June 2012 to life imprisonment on a charge of terrorism!
On appeal, the charges were reduced and he was given a three-year jail sentence.
Ruvakuki was accused of complicity with a rebel group when all he did was his duty as a journalist to anticipate the news.
Shortly before his arrest, he went to neighbouring Tanzania to cover a Burundian rebel group that was being formed there.
